I am well, thank you!

This new year become a transformed ‘you’ by pampering yourself with wellness practises that are expected to shape the landscape.

In the past few years, we have learned that we can eat less and still get the required nourishment, as long as we eat healthy. We have learned the value of spending time with family; that work is important but other aspects of life are also a priority. And, most importantly, we have realised that health should always take precedence.

The pursuit of wellness thus has become an integral part of our lifestyles, and as we start out a new year, it is only wise to invest and indulge in wellness therapies and salubrious practices that will ensure that we walk into spring—the season of new beginnings— with healthy bodies, refreshed minds and rejuvenated spirits.

Digital Detox

While there are no arguments that technology will continue to play a significant role in our daily lives, we will need to promote a healthier relationship with it. Periods of digital detox will help counter the impact constant connectivity has on our mental health. The mantra will thus be: mindful use of technology—something which we can easily weave into our lifestyles by scheduling breaks from screens, tracking app usage, and other digital wellness features.

Personalised Plans

The one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition is also being tossed away to make room for dietary plans tailored to individual needs. Genetic testing and data analysis are now helping to create diets for your unique genetic makeup, metabolism and lifestyle. Much like a customised shirt that fits better than one off the shelf, this targeted approach to nutrition is expected to optimise health outcomes and overall well-being.

Nature Nurture

True, nature-infused wellness practices have been around for some time now; but this year, say experts, it will gain momentum. Even as we become more and more urban-weary, we seek the therapeutic benefits of nature. Forest bathing, ecotherapy, outdoor fitness classes, incorporating natural elements into living spaces—the ways to reconnect with and be nurtured by nature are many. Find your balance and promote mental and emotional well-being by becoming one with nature.

Simply Sleep

Sleep hygiene for overall wellness will be a key focus this year. Sleep deprivation is linked to many diseases and prioritising healthy sleep habits is important. The trick to get a good night’s sleep is to create an optimal sleep environment and utilise technology to track sleep. Syncing with your body's circadian rhythm, avoiding sleeping in—even on weekends, being smart about napping by limiting them to 15 to 20 minutes in the early afternoon, avoiding blue light of devices before sleep and, most importantly, curbing the worry habit are other ways in which you can avoid tossing and turning all night long.

Fine Fettle

Just like sleep, the world is now also alive to the significance of mental health. In fact, this year, a shift to holistic mental health practices has been predicted—from meditation and breathwork to mindfulness and more. The emphasis now is on mind-body connection and integrative fitness experiences that marry physical exercise with mindfulness— yoga, Pilates and tai chi, take your pick. Today, corporates even offer resources and programmes for workplace well-being—going beyond traditional assistance programmes to include wellness perks, mental health support, flexible work arrangements.

Restoring Retreats

Topping the wellness trend list this year, however, is wellness-focused travel experiences and retreats. Such retreats have been growing over the past few years, offering curated programmes to heal the harmony between body, mind and spirit. So, seek out destinations that not only offer relaxation but also physical activity, mindfulness, and healthy eating. Whether focused on fitness, nutrition, or holistic healing, these immersive environments will help you rejuvenate and reset yourself.

Finally, as the world navigates through its many complexities, it is evident that wellness is becoming more and more holistic and individualised. At the same time, online platforms and social media groups dedicated to health and well-being are providing a sense of community, support and motivation—also fostering a collaborative approach to wellness. The idea is collective well-being and balanced and fulfilling individual lives.
